Metal Filling Removal

Many of us tend to forget how far dental technology has come over the past few decades, and even in the past couple of years.

So in turn, we forget that the past dental work we’ve had done can actually be updated. The most prominent and surprisingly easy to fix problem are mercury-based amalgam fillings. Geoffrey Deeb Dental in Holland Park can remove old mercury-based fillings and safely replace them with white fillings that bond to the tooth tissues.

Amalgam fillings are not a new dental development; in fact they have been used for the past century and a half by dentists. Mercury and a combination of other substances were the materials of choice for dental restoration because they were thought to be particularly strong and purportedly lasted a very long period of time. However, in recent years it has been determined that mercury is a hazardous substance that has been linked to some of the following conditions:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Kidney damage
  • Brain damage

In fact, the UN Environmental Programme signed a treaty committing itself to reducing the use of mercury worldwide, including in dentistry. Amalgam fillings release only miniscule quantities of mercury vapour into the blood stream, so their impact isn’t fatal, but can be exacerbated by other conditions like bruxism (grinding). Amalgam fillings are becoming less common in modern dentistry, which has experienced a shift towards materials like composite resin and porcelain, as well as a move towards the removal of old amalgam fillings.

Amalgam fillings are noticeable

One of the biggest drawbacks to mercury-based amalgam fillings is that they are hugely noticeable in the mouth. They are usually dark and metallic in colour, which is a stark contrast to the natural whiteness of the tooth. Dr Geoffrey Deeb in Holland Park is able to safely and effectively remove your amalgam fillings and replace them with white fillings which are made from composite resin or porcelain, which are aesthetically pleasing, strong and safe.

Avoid fillings in the first place

The best option for your teeth is always to maintain their health through daily brushing and flossing. You should brush in the morning and at night, for at least two minutes each time, as well as floss at least once a day. This will help to maintain the health of your teeth so that you will be less likely to need fillings. As a general rule it is also suggested that you visit the dentist at least once every six months so that they can assess the state of your teeth and pinpoint any particular areas that are getting missed during your daily oral hygiene routine. Your dentist can also perform a scale and clean to remove the build-up of plaque on your teeth, which can cause tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease.
