Dental Implants Brisbane

Dental implant surgery is a very safe and effective long term dental procedure to replace missing teeth.

Dental implants can allow patients to restore their smile and enjoy improved appearance, function and quality of life.  Dental implants are long-lasting tooth root replacements that are implanted into the jawbone to simulate the root of a pre-existing tooth. Replacement teeth then can be restored immediately, returning a spectacular smile quickly—usually on the same day. Unlike dentures or bridges, dental implants don’t move or shift and they can last a lifetime.

Dental implants are essentially a tiny biocompatible titanium screw inserted directly into your jawbone material at the site of tooth loss. After a period of months your dental implant will fuse with the jawbone as it heals, providing a strong and durable tooth root alternative. Once the titanium screws are fused to your jaw bone, a dental crown (cap) or bridge (three caps fused together to form one dental appliance) is then placed over the implant.

Dental implant treatment is carried out over a number of months and usually involves:

  • The titanium implant: Titanium plants fuse with the jawbone during the healing process to become part of your natural jawbone.
  • The abutment: Posts are then attached by fitting over the portion of the implant to provide the base for prosthetic teeth.
  • The crown: A crown is then modelled by a Prosthodontist and fitted onto the abutment for a natural appearance and fully functioning dental restoration.

Tooth Extraction Brisbane

Occasionally, decayed teeth, wisdom teeth and broken teeth will sometimes need to be extracted to make it easier for you to eat and drink more comfortably.

A surgical extraction involves teeth that cannot be seen easily in the mouth, either because they have broken off at the gum line or because they have not come in yet. Another reason for a surgical extraction is that the tooth to be removed requires a flap be cut in the gum for access to remove bone or a section of the tooth. Oral surgeons commonly do surgical extractions. They can be done with local anaesthesia or conscious sedation. Patients with special medical conditions and young children may be given general anaesthesia. In a surgical extraction, the dentist will need to make an incision in your gum to reach the tooth. In some cases, the tooth will need to be broken into sections to be removed.

In the case of wisdom tooth removal, you may be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. A general anaesthetic may be used, especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed at the same time. A general anaesthetic prevents pain in the whole body and will cause you to sleep through the procedure. Before being placed under general anaesthetic we recommend that you don’t eat or drink after midnight on the night before surgery so that you are prepared for the anaesthetic.

To remove the wisdom tooth, we will open up the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. We then separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth.
